A Season of Emotions
This exhibition is a reflection of my experience as a student-athlete, and how the emotional and mental aspects of a sports season can shift over time. Through the course of my independent study, I explored my own journey through preseason, midseason, and the end of season—using different art forms to express the highs, lows, and everything in between.
Each “room” in the exhibition represents a different phase of the season. I used drawings, paintings, and journal entry pieces to show how my emotions personally changed over time. I created three sets of three pieces each, each piece representing a phase in the season. Two drawing sets representing how my injuries progressively get more painful throughout the season, and one painting set representing how the excitement of the season decreases. I also created a watercolor and colored pencil piece that reflects the mental weight that builds up throughout the season.
What makes this project even more meaningful is the collaboration with my teammates. They each were instructed to reminisce for a little bit and then create a piece of work to represent how they felt during that time of season. They could create whatever they wanted to, no limitations.
This project gave me a way to express things I’ve felt but never fully processed before—like the pressure to always perform, the mental toll of injuries, and the constant balancing act of school, sports, and life. I hope this exhibition gives people a better understanding of what it feels like to live through a season, and maybe even start conversations about what we don’t always show on the surface.
