Through the Veil

Through the Veil is an in-depth photographic and videographic study of representations and identities in people of color. This exhibition is a collaborative effort between myself and the depicted subjects to display intersecting forms of external and internal identities that not only affect my subjects' personal and social lives but very much so dictate them. These renditions also analyze and play on popular media misrepresentations of people of color which either fetishize and exoticize racial identities or dehumanize and denigrate them.
The final works are created by blending traditional photographic/videographic techniques like set design, shot direction, and practical effects with modern, digital photomanipulation techniques like cloning and precise, manual rotoscoping. All aspects and elements of my subjects however are unaltered, in order to maintain as much authenticity to real representations as possible. The digital manipulation solely includes cloning techniques and basic color-grading edits such as black, white, and color balances.
Altogether, this exhibition effectively illustrates my ability to form a visual bridge between my subjects and the public, while also authentically resonating lived-experience narratives and identity personifications through photo-manipulated renderings.
