Dancing with Wooster
“Artistic experience (…) enables access to an inherent but latent spirit of community that exists within all individuals.” -Diana Boros
Over the years I have spent much of my time at the College of Wooster dancing with my friends. Dance parties have become safe havens; places where individuals can express themselves without many inhibitions. In addition to photographing these parties. I was inspired to invite individuals to dance in my studio alone. ”What do you love to do?” and “Dancing Alone Together” are the result of this collaboration with nineteen of my peers. These pieces are celebrations of individual self-expression and explorations into how we navigate space as a community. “Memory Map of Wooster” continues this exploration of space and community.
This project has sought to facilitate collaborative artwork, and to explore the physical and social space of Wooster, OH. Art making is empowering: when we are taught to express ourselves we are taught to give and receive. Be it the enthusiastic energy of a dancing party-goer; or the tender vulnerability of someone dancing alone; or the daily experiences offered up by this small city, this body of work came to fruition through a sharing of gifts.
